I’d like to express my deepest admiration for the family, those that took part in this performance and recording and especially Spencer, Chris, Ben, Ryan, and Samara, who have been the core of SSM these last few iterations.
Many thanks to Kris Davis, Saint, Joe, Ryan Streber, Isabel Breskin and Blank Forms for their support.
Special thanks to David Breskin and Chelsea Hadley. This piece would not have been possible without their insight and support and without the help of a grant from The Shifting Foundation. And to Megan Schubert for her tremendous work in putting together the choir and being my voice of reason throughout.
This version of Seven Storey Mountain would have been impossible if not for the kindness of Teun Verbruggen, Lien Van Steendam, and Simon Plancke of Werkplaats Walter and Bertrand Flamang of the Gent Jazz Festival. They gave the time, resources, and space to develop this piece in a series of small ensemble performances on July 8 and 9, 2019. Those performances included Nate Wooley, Samara Lubelski, C. Spencer Yeh, Chris Corsano, Ryan Sawyer, Teun Verbruggen, Julien Desprez, Bram DeLooze and Henrik Lasure.
Seven Storey Mountain VI contains three works from others that must be acknowledged. Within the pre-recorded tape there reside deeply-altered portions of John Berryman’s 77 Dream Songs, recorded by Megan Schubert, and Will Guthrie’s “Breaking Bones.” Much more obvious is the use of Peggy Seeger’s “Reclaim the Night.” Permission has been received from representatives of all parties for use in this recording.
A portion of the royalties from each sale will be donated to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). To learn more please visit ncadv.org
